Jefferson enjoyed playing the violin. Here he wears a velvet clawhammer coat with stand-up collar and broad lapels, decorated with brass buttons. Sleeves, both men's and women's, were now flared at the cuff and worn down to the knuckles. His waistcoat is of striped silk and has a stand-up collar. The stock is decorated with fluted chitterlings. He is wearing satin knee breeches. Pocket watches with colorful fobs were important items of dress.
