President Jefferson and his friend Dolley Madison are depicted as they would dress for a dinner party at the White House. The president is dressed in a silk faille clawhammer coat with a matching velvet collar. He wears a silk waistcoat, and knee breeches over hose and soft court pumps, called “escarpins.” Dolley Madison is wearing an Empire gown on double bands of gold soutache or braid. Her matching turban, built onto an embroidered headband, is topped by an ostrich plume. A heavy silk shawl and fan complete the outfit.
