Dear Reader:
This month, we explore our active titles in the popular field of Game Theory, an enormously important intellectual system with numerous applications to social, economic, and political problems. You'll be able to enjoy free downloads from two of our most popular books in this area: J. D. Williams' The Compleat Strategyst: Being a Primer on the Theory of Games of Strategy and Game Theory: A Nontechnical Introduction by Morton D. Davis.
Since 1941, Dover has been known for reprinting valuable texts and monographs that, for a variety of reasons, were no long available through their original publishers. Over the past few years, we have been expanding our mathematics and science program by publishing original books or works only available on the internet. This month, we'll present some of our recent original editions, including a concise course on statistical inference and Geometry and Light: The Science of Invisibility, an authoritative textbook by two professors from Scotland's University of St. Andrews.
Our author interview this month is with Dick Hess, the author of the new Dover original Mental Gymnastics: Recreational Mathematics Puzzles. Dr. Hess has amassed a huge collection of over 25,000 mechanical puzzles and is an active member of various recreational mathematics societies and organizations. You can download free sample puzzles from Mental Gymnastics plus bonus puzzles available only through this newsletter.
We also spotlight a true Dover classic, Linus Pauling's General Chemistry. As you may know, Dr. Pauling has the distinction of being the only Dover author to win two Nobel prizes, for Chemistry in 1954 and for Peace in 1962. When we first published our edition of General Chemistry in 1988, the great scientist had only one request: keep the price affordable for students.
I hope you enjoy your latest Dover Math and Science Newsletter. If you have any suggestions on upcoming themes, or have an idea for a book you would like us to publish, please let me know.
Until next month,
John Grafton
Senior Editor
